With the province and Nova Scotia Teachers' Union yet to reach a deal and the 'work to rule' job action still in effect, the 2017 New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic has been cancelled.
The national basketball tournament has been hosted at Breton Education Centre during the first week of February since 1982 and is a major tradition in the town of New Waterford. This would have marked the 36th edition of the Coal Bowl-- a tournament that has never been cancelled.
The tournament includes teams from across the country and is supported by local sponsors and volunteers. Ryan MacDonald of CTV tweeted the news Friday afternoon.

The host BEC Bears won the tournament for the second time in 2016.
