The 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, NS has come and gone.
Did you attend any games? Were you swept up in the excitement? Are you perhaps interested in giving curling a try?
There's lots of reasons to try curling, even if you don't consider yourself an athlete. Curling is loads of fun, as well as being part of an active and healthy lifestyle. It's a social sport where you get to meet lots of new people, and it gets you off the coach during the winter months when - let's face it - it's easy to stay in the house and binge on Netflix for 4 months.
Curling is a sport that is accessible for people of all ages and abilities, from ages 5 to 95. If you can walk and you can sweep, you can curl.
Both clubs in Sydney are primarily for recreational curlers. I.e. we like to compete, but we don't plan to make a living at it.
If you'd like to learn more and perhaps dip your toe in the proverbial waters, here are 3 ways you can do it:
1) Fun Nights
Both Sydney and Schooner Curling Clubs have FUN NIGHTS on a regular basis, where non-members can pay a small fee to try curling for one night. Equipment and training is provided. All you need is a clean pair of running shoes and willingness to try something new and fun. Links to upcoming events below.
SCHOONER FUN NIGHT - MARCH 16TH
2) Learn To Curl Programs
The CBRM hosts Learn to Curl Programs at local clubs from time to time. The next event is Saturday, March 9th at the Schooner Curling Club.
Here is a link to the event on the CBRM's website.
3) Fun Spiels
Curling clubs hold annual FUN SPIELS that are open to the general public, often during opening and closing of the curling season. Below are links to club websites where you can find more information about events and contacts.
If you'd like to learn more, please reach out to any club member or contact the clubs themselves. Curling clubs are always looking for new members.
Here also is a 2 MINUTE VIDEO that explains the basic rules of the game.
Good luck and good curling!
