Do you get good service from CB contractors/CB owned businesses

Do you get "good service " when you shop and buy on Cape Breton from Cape Breton owned businesses and contractors ?? During the summer , we are often focused just on tourism and the service we get at the restaurants. Next time , we'll talk about service might be about getting the car repaired . Certainly when we are into renovations, buying new windows , and now the trend is maybe new windows or heat pumps ; so lets talk about what we expect /experience about service. So , exactly what is good service? Well it's bit iike in the "eye of the beholder " as each of us has different expectations, yet there are common comparisons . Here are a few examples to get us started : * we got our order in 20 minutes !!! * contractors not calling back * waiters and waitresses that seem to forget us * parking and building areas that are not well kept / terrible signs * not able to even get a quote * they sure don't look like they are happy customers * "who's in charge ?"

After a flood at my sister's house, First General was the preferred contractor by ClaimsPro (handling the claim for Aviva). Though they promised a very comprehensive restoration plan (and billed accordingly), there were several significant issues that the owner acknowledged. After doing an incredibly poor paint job on kitchen cabinets where the hardware wasn't even removed from the drawers before painting, he acknowledged it to the ClaimsPro rep, but then quit the project. ClaimsPro let him walk away and still paid him. ServiceMaster was convinced to take the project, though reluctant to take on a project that was already experiencing issues. They did excellent work all along the way, with no serious concerns until the end of the project when ClaimsPro tried to accelerate closing out the project. Without ServiceMaster, my sister's home would have been left with a significant lose in value from poor workmanship and unfinished restoration. I'll spare the extended details. That's a blog topic that requires a full, in depth description at some point. However, I would never let First General step foot in my home, nor anyone I know if they asked me for advice. It was a horrible experience, and resulted in hugely inflated claims to Aviva. If they audited every project managed by ClaimsPro, if a significant number of them proceeded similar to what my sister experienced, the company would be paying out vastly more funds than necessary. So given that limited experience, two did a job that was unacceptable to me, and one did a very good job. The only other issues that come to mind were plumbers that we called who said they only worked for a preferred customer list, and contractors who were asked to come and give an estimate of removing a portion of curb who never bothered to show up. Dave the Plumber actually left a party in dress clothing to come take a look at a sewer backup and sloshed around in overflow water 1/2 inch deep to check it out.

My good service story is about Sampson VW in Sydney. A while back when travelling on Newfoundland realized my scheduled maintenance to change the fluid for the transmission was not done. Called Sampsons, told them I'd be getting off the ferry on a certain day/night . They said fine , come right in the next morning . I was in and out in an hour and a half. Best Service Manager I've run into in along time, but forget his name , but think it was Brian .

We had a flood in our basement and service master was the conpany assigned by our insurance compant to oversee the work. They did a great job. We had to fight with the insurance to let us purchase items from local businesses. They wanted us to purchase supplies from businesses in Sydney instead of the Northside. Haopy to say we won the battle.

I would highly recommend Service Master for any restoration job. When I experienced a flood, they were there immediately and it wasn't an insurance job. My insurance wouldn't cover the damage because it was ground water. Service Master took care of everything and were extremely helpful, professional and courteous. It took a few days to get 'er done and they were on top of it all the time. I would never call anyone else after that. Even after everything was "put back together", I had follow up calls to make sure everything was OK. Wally is quite simply the best! EZ Flow installed a sump pump and followed up to make sure it was working properly. I would recommend them as well. Austin Christmas Plumbing & Heating is another great service provider....always just a quick call away and always with a big smile! Another great service provider is Mallard Electric. They provide instant and "top drawer" service every time and I wouldn't use anyone else. They're on it any time of the day or any day of the week. I would be remiss if I didn't add the amazing service I get at MacDonald KIA. I'm treated like royalty there and I would never go anywhere else. Another place I get top notch service is at Kiju's....wonderful folks there too. One more I'd like to mention is Cody at the Petro-Can/Needs in Sydney River. This guy knows customer service really well and he's good at it. I guess I'm lucky to get such great service....there have been times of poor service but the good outweighs the bad.

Heat Pumps : I went looking for a heat pump contractor and used the NSP website where they have a list of approved contractors as my source . I wanted to know had a good company and wanted to "buy local" . I started back in March. I emailed 3 contractors . I telephoned 3 . Only 1 replied . By early May I went back to two of the 3.The 2nd one was asked twice to give me a quote . Well, twice they agreed and twice they didn't call to tell me anything , the just did not show up. Having had heat pumps before ,I had a pretty good idea of my options and that would be options from a $4k to maybe a $12K system . At the end of the day, the ONLY contractor that came to quote, ended up installing two independent mini split units and that was Cape Breton Heat Pumps from Middle River . They came once to look, then once to quote and give me the 3 options , and then came to install . They always called ahead , came on time, and did a very good installation at a competitive price . So i'd only recommend CB Heat Pumps ( but they do limit their territory ) .
