29,207 Syrian refugees have arrived in Canada since November 4, 2015, with plans to welcome a total of 100,000 by the end of 2016. Many of these families will find themselves in major cities, such as Toronto and Montreal, but some have already found their way to Cape Breton with the help of local groups, such as New Dawn Enterprises, Lifeline Syria Cape Breton, and Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish.
For many of these families, the transition will not be easy. The language and cultural barriers are high, and many everyday tasks we take for granted will be constant challenges for these newcomers. Luckily, there are Canadians that understand these difficulties, and will be there to help.
This is what happened when 50 people came together to do the right thing in Toronto, and help one Syrian family find their way to their destination.
