Highlanders Defeated By Red-Hot PE Island Storm

Jamal Reynolds of the Highlanders can only watch as Franklin Session of the Island Storm scores two points

The Cape Breton Highlanders professional basketball team were in Charlottetown on Sunday afternoon to take on the PE Island Storm as they continued their season high six-game road trip. The Highlanders only had eight players dressed again, as they continue to play with a shortened bench.

The Highlanders opened the scoring, going a 5-0 run, and continued their good offensive pace to hold the lead throughout the first quarter. The Highlanders fought hard on defence against a dangerous Storm team and were able to lead, 27 - 21, heading into the second quarter.

The Storm surged to start the second quarter however, going on a 7-point run, before the Highlanders were able to answer and take the lead again. Both teams continued to play well, and the Highlanders managed to keep the score close, but it was the Storm leading 54 - 51 at the halftime buzzer.

The game remained close as the Storm managed to hold the lead until the Highlanders scored twice beyond the three-point line to take the lead once again midway through the third quarter. The Highlanders played effective team basketball to end the quarter with the lead, 76 - 71.

The Storm started the fourth quarter on a mission with fast-paced offense and aggressive defence to stifle the Highlanders. The Highlanders refused to give up and continued to battle, but the Storm maintained their streak as the hottest team in the NBLC with their eighth straight victory, winning 116 - 99.

The Highlanders were led by Rick Bodiford, who scored 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists, and Bruce Massey Jr., who achieved a double-double with 18 points, and had a team-high in rebounds, with 10, and in assists, with 9. Malik Story had 22 points and 7 rebounds, while Tydran Beaty scored 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists.

For the Storm, Du’Vaughn Maxwell led the way, achieving a double-double with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists. Kemy Osse scored 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Franklin Session achieved a triple-double, scoring 23 points, while leading his team in rebounds and assists with 14 and 11, respectively.
