Cape Breton as it's own province Pros/Cons, Go!

Justine Williamson would like your thoughts.

Below are some comments from people already to help start the conversation in the comment section below.

"Transfer payments that are not kept by Halifax for their own personal use. We are owed maybe tens if not hundreds of millions that Nova Scotia has not fairly distributed to Cape Breton. That money would turn that island around with investments in many areas to facilitate job growth and infrastructure!"

" Biggest con.. not enough industry to support growth. Retail and restaurants do not create a viable economy."

"There are so many legal battles surrounding this. 1) the illegal annexation of CBI into NS before confederation and 2) the unjust equalization payments. Each of these play into the separation plan."

"PRO - Can control your own immigration program"

"Cape Breton has a separate history and culture to NS. Cape Breton priorities (new job growth, healthcare, managing decline) are different then NS priorities (Halifax). I would love to see us become a separate province."

Pros: Autonomy, full equalization share, income tax revenues, property tax revenues from Nova Scotia Power Cons: Highly unlikely to succeed (moonshot); steals time/resources away from more realistic strategies; current crop of weak Cape Breton leaders/bureaucrats not up to the task of full self-management (next generation insufficient supply, due to outmigration of youth/talent)

Mostly all pros when it comes to having a separate province especially after learning last night at the NSEF meeting that at the current time the province owes CBRM and other municipalities throughout NS 3 billion dollars and counting. Yep, that's billion and not a typo. It would be a difficult battle in trying to get 7 provinces to sign off on it.
