Local Company Signs $14 Million Deal To Send Hemp Oil To Brazil

After only one year in operation, Highland Hemp Manufacturing and Export in Sydney has inked a deal to sell $14 million worth of hemp oil to a Brazilian company. The hemp oil will be used in Brazil’s pharmaceutical industry.

Founder and CEO, Parker Rudderham (pictured above), said, “This is a very exciting milestone for our business. Having a sizeable Purchase Order from a major company opens up tremendous opportunities for our work here in Cape Breton.”

Rudderham credits the longstanding global relationships that his pharmaceutical business has nurtured over the past 20 years for helping him to win this new business. Rudderham left Cape Breton Island in the 1970s to work as a miner in Manitoba, and later became a pharmaceutical sales representative in Quebec, before founding Pharmacy Wholesale Services in Montreal.

Although he still owns the pharmaceutical company, Rudderham returned to Cape Breton a few years ago, and has started new businesses and invested in others. He has also made sizeable donations to organizations like the YMCA of Cape Breton.

“I believe this sale is just one of many to come for Highland Hemp. My hope is that I can help start an industry here in Cape Breton to grow hemp, and create value-added products that will be exported around the world. Having this large sale in hand proves that this is not just a dream, it’s already happening,” said Rudderham.

technology that efficiently extracts oil from the seeds.

Hemp is a hardy and versatile plant, and Rudderham has proven that it can grow well in Cape Breton, having farmed some land near the former tar ponds site and another location.

Hemp fiber from the stalks is extremely durable.

Hemp seeds have high nutritional value and are used to make cooking oils, salad dressings, energy bars, protein shakes, and more. The hemp plant can also be used to make clothing, biodegradable plastics, some fuels, and a variety of other industrial materials.

Of particular interest to the pharmaceutical industry is an ingredient in hemp called Cannabidiol (CBD).  CBD is thought to be widely useful in medical applications, due to clinical reports showing that it is non-psychoactive (has no mind altering effects) and lacks side effects. Studies have found that CBD includes medical properties that can help with a variety of disorders.

Hemp is sometimes confused with the herb, cannabis, which contains high amounts of THC and is used to make marijuana. This confusion has slowed down development of the hemp industry in many countries around the world, despite the significant economic potential that hemp holds.

Rudderham explained, “Hemp is in great demand around the world. We are years ahead here in Canada, and I think this emerging industry has the potential to transform the Cape Breton economy. I haven’t been this energized since the early days of starting Pharmacy Wholesale Services.”

Like many entrepreneurs who are financially successful, Rudderham is driven by the challenge and personal fulfillment of bringing something new to the world, and particularly with Hemp, the opportunity it provides to help grow the economy of Cape Breton Island.

Rudderham recently became Chair of Business Cape Breton and is focused on assisting local entrepreneurs as described in this related story.
