Mayor McDougall Throwing Shade at Premier Houston?—E39

Episode 39 of a Cape Breton Podcast with Joe Ward, Boxer Shorts Media.

Recent comments from Mayor McDougall published in local media read as though she is throwing shade at Premier Houston. While this is risky business given the many important asks we have, I think there is a concerning pattern. The CBRM isn't showing leadership, is failing to progress their own milestones, and are then directing blame at the province. I'll offer some examples.

The sooner our Cape Breton elected officials realize we need “made in Cape Breton solutions” the stronger and more self reliant we will be. I’m personally sick of everything being either the federal government or provincial government’s fault. The vast majority of Cape Bretoner's are hard working, people of pride, and also the most resilient people in the nation. We need to firstly adopt a “waste not a penny” mentality where budgets are not written by dreamers, but by realists. We need to lower taxes, and attract companies that manufacture goods for the New England and European markets. We can’t convince companies to come here with high taxes and surely we should have learned by now that government handouts to attract companies to come to Cape Breton don’t work, and those that did, were short lived. We don’t need thousands of jobs to turn our beautiful Island’s economy around. Get real, trim budgets, lower commercial and residential taxes, and give companies a reason to establish here. We also need an aggressive program that tackles unsightly properties, and the enormous litter that Cape Bretoner’s themselves have caused. It’s shameful that such a beautiful place wears them scares of human behaviour. The first thing I would do is forbid Saltwire staff from throwing fliers in plastic bags along our roadways. They should be required to place them in mailboxes, like they used to. Start small, and grow the population through employment opportunities. It’s time we hired a development expert with connections, and I don’t mean hire someone who is a political appointment whose name was put forth by political friends.

The strongest level of advocacy for a specific region should always come from its municipal government. They closer they are to the people, the better equipped they should be to understand the needs, and the more passionate they should be about doing so.
