A New Yorker article this week mentioned a friendship between President Donald Trump's Chief Strategist, Steve Bannon, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Senior Political Adviser, Gerald Butts.
As many are aware, Gerald Butts is a close friend and ally to the Canadian Prime Minister. He is also a Cape Bretoner, originally from Glace Bay.
After the New Yorker article came out, thestar.com reported that NDP leader Thomas Mulcair wants Butts to 'disavow' his friendship with the controversial figure in the United States. As a former executive for Breitbart News Network, Steve Bannon is commonly associated with far right wing media and is well regarded by the Alt Right groups that include white supremacists, white nationalists, KKK, and Neo-Nazis.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's office characterized Canada's dealings with the United States president and his counterparts as a diplomat relationship.
“The prime minister has worked directly with the president, and staff and officials have worked closely with members of the administration on an ongoing basis, strengthening our relationship and discussing its importance to jobs on both sides of the border”
