New Sydney Library Feasibility Study Presentation - 3 Options

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 11, 2016, Sydney - The Cape Breton Regional Library would like to invite the community to a presentation of the findings of the New Sydney Library Feasibility Study, which will take place on March 29, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the McConnell Library in Sydney.

The Study was completed by consultants Trifos Design, dmA Planning Management Services, and Breton Chartered Accountants. The meeting will give community members an opportunity to learn about three possible options for a new central library in Sydney. Conceptual designs will be available for each option.

"Public libraries are becoming neighbourhood living rooms", said Faye MacDougall, Regional Librarian. "Free public space in our communities is becoming more limited, so having space that is free and open to everyone helps to enrich communities." People go to libraries to borrow books, but they also go to libraries to listen to music, attend poetry and author readings, for family outings with young children, for nutrition programs for seniors, and much more. Libraries fill a need as community centres.

The current McConnell Library opened in 1960 and, at the time, was a state-of-the-art building. After 65 years, it no longer meets the needs of the community. An earlier study on the building found that renovating it would be very costly and would still not meet the needs of a modern library.

Everyone is welcome to attend this presentation to learn more about what a new library could bring to our community. If you are unable to attend, the Study highlights will be available on the Library's website, www.cbrl.ca, after the presentation.

The Study results provide valuable information that will help to move the library project forward. It gives decision makers concrete information to help them make decisions for the future of our community. Your interest and input in this process would be greatly valued.

m all confused about where to ask this question. Sorry if it is in the wrong place.Would anybody know if the waste water treatment for Sydney harbour was ever completed?'

I like Option 2 the best, it will attract more people downtown and clean up that section of the Esplanade. Option 1 is nice but will have limited parking due to hundreds of employees working at Citzenship day and night. Option 3 is my last pick, it defeats the purpose of trying to revitalize downtown. The Target/Zellers location will eventually get used by some retailer but I don't like it as a library. Rumor has it Servicom might be relocating or expanding to the Target site.

Both waterfront options are nice--although Option 1 has an awful lot of glass--problematic in our climate?--and I see parking as a major issue. Also, the building itself is not very attractive based on the sketch. I understand the desire to place the library downtown, but it won't see increased use if there's nowhere to park. If I had to choose a favorite structure, I like Option 2, but I imagine this is entirely dependent on NSCC moving, which I understood is still very much up in the air. The Target building is probably the most accessible, sadly.

Things I would rather see in the old Taget building: 1. A professional level hide and go seek course. 2. A seasonal haunted house to scare children. 3. The Halifax Explosion: The Ride. 4. The Cape Breton Pothole Museum. 5. Trampolines. 6. Dodgeball. 7. Trampoline Dodgeball. 8. An underground rave scene I'm not cool enough to join. 9. A hip artist commune I'm not cool enough to join. 10. Bocci courses and a professional washer toss league. 11. Sydney's premier amateur wrestling venue. 12. A tools workshop you can buy a membership to. There's probably more, but that could give people some ideas.

All good ideas Rory, I would suggest that you send them off to the Sydney Ports Corp attn Marlene Usher because they are the only ones with any money in the CBRM. I was wondering if you were Chinese Rory?, because if you are, they might pay for your expenses $60000 limit of course
