CBC News has tallied up the number of mayors, wardens and councillors in Nova Scotia and the cost of governing 50 separate municipalities. Some elected...
Statics on the populations for number of politicians in various towns of mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. There's a breakdown of the pro rata costs to the individuals in the town in supporting their politicians. To give you an idea of the range of the costs to individual residents of a town:
>>>In Clark's Harbour, a fishing community of 758 people on Cape Sable Island, off the province's southern coast, it costs $114 per resident to pay the annual honorariums of the mayor and six councillors.
To give you an example of how population impacts the individual costs of a resident, in Victoria there are 6552 residents, 8 councillors and the cost to each resident is $28.21.
It seems to me that nothing has changed since the days when my grandfather was a fisherman on Cape Breton Island. As a child I had whimsical ideas that one day (soon) my family would be able to return to the island to live, but that never happened. My father never returned after retiring from the Canadian Military (RCAF), choosing to remain in Ottawa. I am heading home to CB next year, but I would not be if I had to make a living because the pickings are as slim, if not slimmer than ever as far as available work that pays a decent salary.
Reminds me of the joke I heard when I first moved to Toronto years ago about the number of donut shops in Toronto to support the police - one on every corner. That was funny, but this is not when a town of less than 100 has such a high number of politicians and nothing appears to be getting done to better their town.
