Obituary published on January 26, 2022.

We regret to announce the passing of Thomas Alvin Smith on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born Oct. 9, 1933, in Birch Grove, he was the son of the late Erwin and Alma (Robinson) Smith. Following graduation from Mount Allison University, Alvin went to work for the Treasury Board of Canada where he spent 43 years until retirement. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, as well as a huge supporter of Cape Breton Artists. Alvin enjoyed fly and trout fishing and as an avid gardener, he loved spending time tending his gardens. Alvin is survived by his wife, Marion (Weir); nephew, Tom Smith; nieces, Laura Chappell, Kim Smith, Lorna Johnson, Cathy MacLeod, Mary Volpe, Jane Silver and Peggy Staruch; and close cousin, Rae MacKillop of Glace Bay. A special thank you to his lifelong friend, Raymond Goldman of Glace Bay for always being there for our sweet Alvie. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Alvin was predeceased by his parents; sister, Evelyn MacLeod; and brothers, Eugene and William. A graveside service will be held in Black Brook Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Society. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at or e-mail [email protected].
