On occasion, large dust plumes originating in the Saharan Desert are strong enough to make it across the Atlantic, and usually spread out into the Amazon and Caribbean. Very rarely do they ever come up our way.
One such large scale event has been underway since June of this year. Satellite imagery showed it moving again into the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. However, today's imagery (July 10/18) shows that Hurricane Chris, which is moving up along the southeast coast of the US, is dragging some of that dust along with it and toward us.
