VLT Revenue Up 20% Since Techlink's MyPlay System Removed

  • Techlink Entertainment, founded in the mid 1990s, was a Sydney-based company with over 60 employees that created the MyPlay System ... a technology that was added to Nova Scotia VLTs in 2010 to reduce problem gambling.

  • MyPlay System was was scrapped by the NS government in August 2014 because the government said it was not helping curb problem gambling.

  • Controvery arose because the NS government gave no notice to Techlink, quickly ending the company's revenue and forcing it into bankruptcy after 20 years in operation. Techlink claimed that the system was not implemented properly by the NS government.

  • Since the MyPlay System was removed, no replacement has been implemented and VLT revenue has increased significantly. The NS government suggests that new VLT machines have triggered more play, but questions remain about the effectiveness of the MyPlay System and the circumstances in which it was removed, resulting in the demise of a significant employer in Cape Breton and a rise in gambling revenue.
