In the summer of 2021 The Sea Shanty Show played a two week sold-out run at the Highland Arts Theatre in Sydney, NS.
The Show is an original production from Wesley J. Colford featuring the sea shanties of days gone by. Due to popular demand, the show will return once more to the HAT mainstage from July 6th to 9th, but this time completely reimagined. Maintaining the five part harmonies, live accompaniment, and masterful musical arrangements from Chris Mounteer, while adding in more action, play, choreography, through brand new staging from director Marc Richard.
Long time HAT patrons may remember Richard as the director and choreographer of the musical comedy I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change which played in both 2016 and 2019 summer seasons at the downtown theatre. Musical Director and Arranger Chris Mounteer is the talent behind hat shows such as the Cape Breton musical Kitchen Party, and the tribute to George Gershwin ‘Swonderful.
In addition to playing for Cape Breton audiences, the theatre and the show has been contracted by Holland America cruise line to produce performances exclusive to patrons of the cruise ships docking in Sydney this July. The culmination of years of negotiating and a growing partnership.
“It’s very exciting to be able to present Cape Breton talent to both our community and an international audience all without leaving downtown,” said Artistic and Executive Director Wesley J. Colford. “We make it a point to champion Caper talent and voices and that’s exactly what we plan to do for the passengers that join us for the Sea Shanty Show. And for anyone who saw the show in 2021, we’ve got so many surprises in store this time around especially for you so we hope you’ll be able to join us once again!”
In addition to Marc Richard, Chris Mounteer, the creative team is rounded out by Kayla Cormier who is the set, costume and props designer for the show. The cast includes Colford as well as Adam Young, Matt Earhart, Dane Pedersen and Maverick McDougall.
The show runs from July 6th to 9th at the downtown theatre starting at 7:30 each night, with an additional 4:00pm show on Sunday the 9th.
A free web-stream of the show will also be available in August exclusively on the HAT’s Youtube channel.
Tickets are on sale now with the theatre’s Pay-What-You-Choose ticket system, with free tickets available to those in need thanks to the supporters of Radical Access.
