Flooding In Sydney Impacting Homeowners

CTV's Kyle Moore shared a photo of flooding at a Sydney home. He says a woman and her two children have a flooded basement causing a loss of heating. Their backyard is fully flooded.

Several people are sharing photos of flooding and storm damage on Facebook. Sydney resident, Jennifer Witham, described some of the issues near downtown Sydney on Twitter. She says the water is reaching the edge of the bank in Wentworth Park, the bridge crossing Bentinck St. is covered, and many manholes on George St are gushing with water. There were also photos shared of the recurrent flood zone on Townsend St. near the Steel City Sports Bar & Steakhouse.

Flooding and damage are being experienced throughout the island.

I think that part of the reason for increased flooding is all the new neighbourhoods being built in the watershed areas above Wash Brook and Wentworth Brook. Forests absorb rainwater and slow down the transmission of surface water into the brooks. Because many these areas are now paved, or at least without vegetation, rain water runs off really quickly and floods the brooks. And then everyone downstream is affected by the increased water levels.
