Grand Narrows Waterfront Prepared for Event-Filled 2025 Season

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Grand Narrows, NS] – [June 17, 2025] – The Grand Narrows Waterfront Development Society (GNWDS) is excited to welcome back visitors for the summer 2025 season in Central Cape Breton along the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake.
Greeting them will be a striking new highway sign on the corner of Route 223 and the Dogan Road, directing visitors to the scenic waterfront and Wheelhouse Café in Grand Narrows, opening June 19. Familiar and new guests are looking forward to the café’s delicious food, lively entertainment and stunning views as offered every summer.

A Trans Canada Trail Water Route Access point, the Society has received an infrastructure grant assisting with the development of impressive new signage, a new stage for live music events — including the summer-long Sunday Funday concert series — and other site enhancements. The society thanks the volunteers, staff and vendors who have been working hard to prepare for the 2025 season.
The Wheelhouse Café invites locals and visitors to enjoy a unique dining experience with spectacular scenery and a menu inspired by the waterfront’s beauty. The Wheelhouse Café aims to be a community hub — serving a diverse menu that features locally-sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes. Guests can indulge in a variety of options — from fresh seafood to artisanal sandwiches — all while soaking in the waterfront experience.

“Waterfront events are an important part of the local tourism experience,” said Randy Pointkoski, GNWDS Events Coordinator. “We will host outdoor live music every Sunday over the 2025 season, along with several special events.”

Special events will include Water Safety Awareness Day on July 19, our famous Show and Shine Car Show on Aug. 10, and the Barra Strait Mi’kmaq Friendship event — Mawoi’mi Tewitk is an exchange of L’Nu art, culture and music at a wonderful beachside setting — on Aug. 30.

“Our goal,” emphasized Pointkoski, “is to create a welcoming space where people can enjoy great food, connect with each other, and take in the beauty of the waterfront.”

This wonderful sign project at Grand Narrows is a huge accomplishment by the volunteers and team at Grand Narrows Waterfront Society. This project was able to utilize an existing robust sign foundation previously installed. I was lucky enough this week to hear a bit of history about the sign – through an Oral Tradition exchange. According to Paul A. MacLean (Tall Paul), he worked with local welder Sonny Henderson (RIP) to fabricate the anchor bolt cage and the HSS tubing base that was designed for major pylon signs in the mid 1990’s. The robust, high integrity weldment was built and installed by volunteers and grant worker. Those who knew Sonny understand the robust approach he took for all the fabrication and repairs he performed over the years for friends and neighbours. The sign base is another one of Sonny’s signature projects. While the original wooden sign attached to the base did its job for about 25 years, a reasonable design life for wood structures, the steel and concrete base structure would have about 75 years of design life. Based on today condition of the bases there may be another 50 years of life in the foundation. Today’s sign project is a success due to the vision and dedication from 30 years ago during planning, grant management and implementation efforts at the Grand Narrows Waterfront. It will be fun to monitor what vision and actions for the next 25 years at the Waterfront will yield.
