Interview With This Hour Has 22 Minutes Writer Adam Christie

Adam Christie is a writer for Canada's premier comedy show, This Hour Has 22 Minutes, and an accomplished stand-up comedian. He'll be performing along with LA-based comic Caleb Synan (Conan, Last Comic Standing) on July 8th at Flavor on the Water. We asked him a few questions about writing for 22 Minutes and performing stand-up.

How did you first get your start on This Hour Has 22 Minutes?

22 Minutes needed a new writer who could also be the warm-up person, which is someone who riles up the crowd before a television taping. I was suggested by a few of the staff writers, and on a Monday at 9 pm I was asked if I'd fly to Halifax the next morning. It all happened very quickly, and at the time I wasn't as educated on Canadian politics as I am today. I remember on my first day someone telling me that the show was mostly focusing on the senate scandal, and I was like "Oh yes of course," and then quickly looked up what that meant.

At this point in your career, do you consider yourself to be more of a stand up or more of a writer, or are the two fairly balanced?

It's balanced, but I can't imagine a time where I'm not doing stand-up.

What is the sketch or joke you've written for 22 Minutes that you're most proud of? Any you particularly like that never made it to air?

Also this horrible dumb joke never made air: "According to a recent study, Norway is the world’s happiest country. Said Australia, “Nawrway? Nawr-Way!”

What's the most memorable moment for you on the show?

We took the show to Ottawa a few years ago and I got to do warm-up in front of a huge sold-out theater filled with politicians. Something VERY embarrassing happened to me while performing which I won't talk about here, but I'd be happy to tell you if you come to the show. Oh, and I got to meet Loonette the Clown from Big Comfy Couch this year. That was a big deal.

How did this tour with Caleb Synan happen?

Mainly I wanted to show Caleb the east coast. I love it here, but never get an opportunity to come here in the summer. I don't think I've ever been this excited for a tour. We're going to Sydney, Toronto, Washington DC, Chattanooga... it's a real mixed bag of cities.

Will this be your first time performing in Cape Breton?

NO! I've performed in Port Hawkesbury and Membertou. I always like driving out to Cape Breton, mainly because of Mother Webb's.

Check out Adam Christie and Caleb Synan live at Flavor on the Water Comedy Night this Saturday, July 8th. Tickets are just $15 and the event will have appetizer and drink specials. Show starts at 9pm
