National Basketball League of Canada Commissioner, David Magley (pictured above on the right), was in Cape Breton on May 29 to meet with the Highlanders front office and to present the Ian Fowler Award to Tyrone Levingston.
Levingston is the founder, President, General Manager, and one of the owners of the Cape Breton Highlanders professional basketball team. The 2017 National Basketball League of Canada awards were announced three weeks earlier (view story here), shortly after the regular season ended, and this was Magley's first opportunity to deliver the award in person.
Describing Levingston's accomplishments, Magley said, "Tyrone moved to one of the more remote places in the populated part of Canada, from Detroit MI. He knew not a soul and after two years of pounding the pavement and knocking on doors, he brought professional basketball to Sydney, Cape Breton NS. He wins the Ian Fowler Award, because it was that very same 'can do' spirit possessed the late Ian Fowler who was the driving force behind the [NBLC Moncton] Miracles, U2 & the Rolling Stones all coming to Moncton NB."
After a successful inaugural season, the Cape Breton Highlanders look forward to season two starting late this year.
The NBLC championship series is currently being played between the Halifax Hurricanes and the London Lightning, with the best of seven series tied at one game apiece. The games can be watched live and recorded on the NBLcanada.ca
