NOVA SCOTIANS ARE DYING BECAUSE OF PUBLIC POLICY

Desired outcomes from this article:

  • Kim Masland needs to do the right thing for Nova Scotians as a whole and push for the recall the Road Trails Act.
  • Mayor McDougall needs to remove ATVs from the Coal Town Residential ATV Trail (RAT).
  • The ATV Association of Nova Scotia needs to be defunded and the public money that they directly access be used for the betterment of Nova Scotia.

Let's start off with some very sad yet predictable and avoidable ATV tragedies that occurred in Nova Scotia in just the last week. Sincerest Condolences to the families and loved ones involved. Both of these horrible incidents are ATVs being driven on roadways. The NS Road Trail Act is telling ATV drivers that it is okay to drive on roadways. It is not and it is proven by research and continual deaths on Nova Scotia roadways year after year.

Kim Masland is the Minister of Public Works for Nova Scotia. She has responsibility of the "Duty Of Care" of all Nova Scotians. This means she should not advocate for policies that harm Nova Scotians. This is a just FACT that applies to all public servants. In reference to a pilot project that put more ATVs on a few designated roads Public Works Minister Kim Masland called the pilot project a tremendous success. From what we have been seeing in Nova Scotia thus far, The Road Trail Act will also increase the number of ATVs on roadways illegally and increase the number of deaths. We have the data in CBRM that shows how public policy like this is causing an increase in illegal ATV activity.

I will assert that it is 100% known that ATVs are not safe to drive on roadways, paved or unpaved. I can do this because it is common knowledge and this knowledge is available to all, including Kim Masland. If this is commonly known then should the Minister of Public Works of Nova Scotia be advocating for increasing the number of ATVs on roadways? This is the question that Minister Masland needs to answer to.

This report is available for Kim Masland to read but she just really needs to look at the data in Nova Scotia to see ATV + Roads = Death:

New Study Finds that ATVs Should Not be Operated on Paved or Unpaved Roads · Consumer Federation of America

https://consumerfed.org/press_release/new-study-finds-that-atvs-should-not-be-operated-on-paved-or-unpaved-roads/

From this report:

  • 60% of all U.S. ATV-related fatalities involved roadway crashes
  • 42% of the total 6,625 roadway deaths occurred on unpaved roads
  • ATVs are not designed for on-road use as manufacturers and advocates make clear and this study reinforces that ATVs on roads are dangerous no matter the surface type.

Kim Masland also has access to the following information (Nova Scotia, Canada, USA) that indicates that it is contradictory to "Duty Of Care" to increase the number of ATVs on roadways or otherwise:

ATV injuries for youth 'alarmingly high,' top Maritime pediatricians say

All-terrain vehicle injuries top list of trauma-related admissions to pediatric intensive care unit

An open letter signed by 15 doctors in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick said ATV injuries were the number one trauma-related reason for admission to the Maritime's only pediatric intensive care unit last year at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax.

All-terrain vehicle serious injuries and death in children and youth: A national survey of Canadian paediatricians

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) are a leading cause of serious injury in children and youth.

Pediatric and adolescent injury in all-terrain vehicles

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) remain a significant source of death and injury among youth. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the scope of the problem, the risk factors involved, crash-related outcomes and costs, and injury prevention strategies. There are currently more than 100 pediatric ATV-related fatalities each year and over 30,000 emergency department visits, with a potential annual cost for deaths and injuries approaching $1 billion.

Kim Masland's Road Trails Act is encouraging more and more ATVs to drive on Nova Scotia roadways, designated or not. This will kill more and more Nova Scotians.

In CBRM the current Mayor and council has gone behind the backs of local residents and against their wishes and perverted a decade long Active Transportation Trail project into a Residential ATV Trail (RAT) (READ HERE). How this was done and why it was done is very questionable behavior but for this article we are concerned with the fact that this public policy has increased the number of off-road vehicles on public streets and sidewalks (illegally) by over 10 times. The Mayor and council are public servants and have the responsibility of "Duty Of Care". This means they should not put policies in place that harm CBRM residents. Again, this is a just FACT that applies to all public servants.

Official statement from the current mayor of CBRM, in the Mayor's office, promoting the increased use of ATVs in residential areas. This is fact and public.

Let's get the RATs out of our community :-)

I have to make this statement so it is clear that I am not seen as harassing our elected officials or any groups of people: The following is political commentary related to community damaging and people harming policies that need to be reversed for the betterment of "all CBRM". This article is about recent unsanctioned decisions and actions in CBRM that are causing real community issues and can most likely be correlated to deaths and injuries, that's all.
