A CBRM Election Issue

Please watch the video above.

The sitting mayor and and most of the sitting Council say that they cannot consider the environment when making planning decisions.

This not the case.

In fact, they, as are other municipalities required, by the Municipal Government ACT to create policies considering the environment.

The video clips within this video are from a discussion about a possible large-scale development on the shores of an important pond next to the Bras d’Or Lake. As you will see, the sitting mayor and two other councillors, and there were others, told us that they could not consider the environmental impact of the proposal.

Odd, odd, situation.

Also, one councillor told everyone that if Council did not vote for this development that they could be sued by the developer. (?)

The development in question was quashed by the Utility and Review Board for not meeting even the basic criteria applied to it.

This issue must be cleared up.

Please ask ask all candidates for mayor and council if they believe that CBRM has the jurisdiction to protect its valuable natural spaces for over-development.

Many councillors just took cues from the administration. For something like zoning, I'm not even sure that a policy specific to environmental impact would be required for an individual councillor(s) to take it into consideration. Those community members opposed to the Big Pond development made a multi-faceted argument, and ultimately the NSUARB agreed. I don't like the idea of simply avoiding consideration of such arguments with a suggestion that it's not within the scope of their decision making. As you've pointed out numerous times, that viewpoint isn't well substantiated. I started with a "this looks cool" position, but the increased awareness of the concerns quickly gave me pause.

Yes, the concern is that no other entity is going to do what Mayor Clarke and most councillors say have no jurisdiction to do. It is one thing to say that you don’t want to consider the environment, and another to say you can’t. Great luck in your race!
