I remember a Canada Day in my youth spent on Parliament Hill. It was the best Canada Day ever! I waited all day to be front row to see Roch Voisine and I watched as Mr. Dress Up became a Canadian citizen. The biggest thrill was getting to shake Mr. Dress Up’s hand after the ceremony when he approached the crowd that was formed. After the concert after not drinking all day in the hot sun, I stopped at a Lemonade stand for a taste of the sweetest lemonade I have ever tasted. It was delicious but then maybe it was so delicious because I was so thirsty. Honestly, I would have drank just about any liquid at the time. Thankfully however, the sweetest tasting lemonade was within my reach. Fast forward a few years and where am I spending Canada’s 150th birthday but right here in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. Oh sure I did not get to meet anyone like Mr. Dress Up but I walked through Renwick Brook on the way to Queen Elisabeth Park to watch a local band called Jofo perform. They actually had quite a good rock sound with original tunes. I will definitely be checking them out on iTunes. There was also not a bad turnout in the park with games and jumbo freezies for the kids (both big and little). Everyone decked out in their best Canada T-shirt made me proud to be Canadian and from the Bay. We have a wealth of natural beauty here in Glace Bay and it is only when you get out in it do you appreciate it. Walking through Renwick Brook Trail the first thing that catches your eye is all the ducks that come to greet you expecting food. Sorry ducks, I have no food currency but almost feel like I am letting them down when they finally see I have nothing. “Next time,” I say, “Next time.” As if they can really understand my musings and even if they could would they believe me this time? Chances are I will forget the bread next time and the ducks and I will have the same conversation all over again. “Next time,” I will say, “Next time.” However you have spent your Canada Day, I hope you were all in good spirits and to know that we all live in one of the greatest countries on the earth. I have no experience with space travel so I wouldn’t know how the provinces are out there. I have been very lucky to have both visited and lived in every province except for one still on my bucket list… Newfoundland.
