In 2005, my dad (Vince Cunningham) and my sister Carol placed a small Geocaching Travel Bug in a cache in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Its mission? To make its way to the town of Bekescsaba, Hungary, where my dad once worked and made dear friends.
He named it "Racer 400".
Fast forward nearly 20 years...
Dad passed away in 2018, and we had long forgotten about the Travel Bug—until I received a surprise log notification from Geocaching this summer.
That little tag? It has now:
✅ Travelled over 68,000 km
✅ Been picked up and dropped off 1,910 times
✅ Crossed continents and countries—from Canada to Florida, Germany, Türkiye, Norway, and more
And now? It's in Hungary!
Nearly 20 years later, Racer 400 is in the country Dad hoped it would reach. 💙

Some beautiful logs along the way:
📍 “Racer 400 is here :-)” – Zürich, 2007
📍 “So happy to see something from Nova Scotia be found by a Nova Scotian (but in Turkey!) What are the odds?!” – Türkiye, 2009
📍 “I couldn't leave it at the beautiful Schönbrunn Palace. So the TB is coming with us for a bit...” – Vienna, 2010
📍 “Found this TB in a great cache. It will be not so easy to take him near to Hungary, but I'll do my best...” – Germany, 2011
📍 “At a truly fantastic Baltic Sea christening held by the people of Saxony-Anhalt, I was able to admire a lot of coins and TBs. One of them was this one, thanks for sharing!” – Baltic Sea, 2011
📍 “I will take you as far north as you’ve never been before!” – Norway, 2013
There are hundreds more.
The surprise log notification from Geocaching...
📍 “I've been carrying this trackable with me for a while now. I knew it wanted to go to Hungary, and since I was coming here soon (and am now on holiday here!), it was the perfect opportunity. We shared many adventures together on the way here. But today, here at the beautiful Kis-Balaton, our paths diverge. I wish it a safe onward journey and hope it reaches its next destination securely!” – Hungary, 2025
And a log entry from yesterday...
📍 “Little guy is taking a quick detour! Going back on main track soon” – Budapest, 2025
It's hard to describe how much this means.
A small object, carried by hundreds of strangers, completing a journey started by my father—a legacy still moving.
