At $140 Million, CBU's Revenue Almost as Much as CBRM's—E60

Episode 60 of a Cape Breton Podcast with Joe Ward, Boxer Shorts Media.

A CBC interview recently discussed Cape Breton University's explosion of revenue by about $40 Million, up to about $140 Million in 2023. This is largely due to international student enrolment, and the tuition and fees it brings in. Upon hearing the interview, I figured a comparison with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality's annual revenue was in order.

Would you believe that a university with under 10,000 students is earning revenue that is almost as much as our entire municipality, serving about 100,000 people—and taxing all of our property?

When you have a thick wallet, you'll find eyeballs pointed in your direction. This is especially so right now, with the CBRM feeling the pressure of a housing crisis and Transit usage up by 400%. I support the CBC's showcase of the university's economic success, but caution all local media that it should always be put in context of the impact on the larger community. The unintended consequences of CBU's success are quite dire right now.

The video is right on the mark. There are "growth" issues that have to be managed.Just wanna add something that may be lost in all the negative media stuff that pops up about student growth. From my personal interaction with the foreign students while I am out and about they are: friendly, polite, chatty interesting and fill vacant jobs where qualified.Strike up a conversation. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Agree. I love the international students. Outstanding people! There is an unwelcoming undertone out there that comes up at times, suggesting that international students are a problem. That's primarily just prejudice of one variety or another. They represent an incredible mutually beneficial economic success story. As you said, it's only about the management of that growth rate that creates the problems we need to address. And, they share the unintended hardships with us as local residents looking for a safe place to live and suitable employment opportunities. We need to build to grow. Build infrastructure and then growth proportionately. We don't need to become Halifax. But we do have voids left by the tens of thousands who have left us over the decades of decline.

That prejudice stuff drives me nuts. They are just people like us,in some cases better.I make it a point to stop people in their tracks if they start with the nonsense. The problems are the creation of the mucky mucks not the students.

Guys, I totally agree. The international students I have interacted with in their places of employment are very pleasant and helpful. No complaints from this old guy. Good video Joe. Maybe consider another run at a political office.
