Breton Books Publishes David Muise Short Stories: I'm Just Sayin'

Sydney columnist, mayor, lawyer, and storyteller David Muise left us one last gift of laughter and insight—I’m Just Sayin', the best of his shorter writings.

The chapters range from growing up in Ashby to the Victoria Day swim, from the dreaded Man Cold to evenings when—at his father's command—David would waltz his mother around the kitchen while keeping an eye on his waiting dinner so that his siblings could not grab it. He shares the pleasures and pitfalls of growing up in the Fifties and Sixties—rock-and-roll, circus mayhem, miners’ vacation on the Mira, and bobsledding out of control. His memories kindle our own memories. His admiration for honesty, for heroes like Terry Fox and for the Christmas role of the Nathansons of Whitney Pier, and for his parents who raised nine children on a steelworker’s wages—point the way to a fulfilling community for us all.

A collector of country music song titles such as “She Took Everything But the Blame” and “I Baked Him a Pie But He Wanted a Tart” and “You Ain’t Much Fun Since I Quit Drinkin’”—and the inciter of the Fruitcake Wars—David’s passion for honesty and his love of laughter offer inspiration for a better world. And as a passionate Rotarian, he lived the motto of "Service Above Self."

David was already a hero to his readers as the bestselling author who gave life to the outrageous brothers Jim and Farquhar in his novels Awake at a Wake and Awake Yet.

“A river of humanity and good humour runs through I’m Just Sayin’—the mark of a decent man and an insightful Cape Bretoner,” said the book’s publisher Ronald Caplan, adding that making the book brought out the best in everyone. “Everyone involved went out of their way to help us, from the people at Cape Breton Post where the stories were first published to David's wife, Deborah George, who step by step approved the project. Photographer Morrison Powell refused to give up his search for the perfect portrait of David that he had taken several years ago. It proved to be the finishing touch to a delightful front cover for the book."

I’m Just Sayin' is available in gift shops and book outlets across Cape Breton Island. It is also distributed off island by Nimbus Publishing, and through Amazon and Indigo online, and independent bookstores.

It can be ordered directly from Breton Books who will ship the book anywhere in the world—via www.capebretonbooks.com and 1-800-565-5140
