Campaign Issue: Lock Them Up!

Archie MacKinnon has been running an odd campaign for CBRM mayor: As I have pointed out before his Facebook page is stuffed with wacky accusations regarding Mayor Clarke and Councillor McDougall.

And now now he is threatening to, using other words: Lock them Up!

Please reject this Trumpian tactic.

We are responsible for rejecting this campaign and its dark messages.

Surely we can expect all candidates to stop themselves from threatening to throw their competitors in jail should they win? #noonehastogotojail

Archie was always focused on one thing: removing Cecil Clarke from the office of mayor. However, he's clearly lost sight of his objective. He's now working against the only candidate that has the potential to defeat Clarke in this election: Amanda McDougall. What this means is that if McDougall were to lose, the votes she needed will have been consumed by Archie. And that suggests that Archie will not only fail to get what he wanted most, but he might be the one person in the CBRM that played a key role in causing it to happen. Valid criticism of our leaders is one thing. But if we put ourselves on the ballot to replace them, one would hope that we'd actually show ourselves to be a better option. That's not what we're seeing... except by Amanda McDougall and her campaign team. She's shown the class required to lead our municipality.

Archie has lost his perspective and objectivity, which is too bad for someone who is genuinely concerned about people and the Community and has been tireless worker for both. At this point, he is being heavily influenced by the strong showing that he had as a federal Independent, and not accepting that much of it was a protest vote against 2 federal parties and other candidates. Plus he is being pushed by a cadre of 'supporters' who want to continue to show their disdain for the process or have another agenda like equalization or CB autonomy. Unfortunately neither they or Archie have any real understanding of those issues or how to deal with them, to say nothing of the Tax Cap, the Charter or the economy. He will finish a distant third in the voting but may very well steal enough votes from Amanda to have her place second; he is not stealing a single vote from Clarke! If he really wanted positive change in CBRM, he'd resign his misguided campaign, and throw his support behind Amanda.

I wish he had stood down. I wrote an article that presented a case for it long before the election, but all it did was fire him up. However, as you noted, he was probably still running on the relative success of his MP campaign, and probably could not be deterred from running. The Cape Breton autonomy supporters have been the worst influence during this campaign. If Clarke wins, then I'll call him Archie's mayor from then on.

This is a very on-target assessment based on what I have observed of the campaign and related behavior.

This is a quote from Dr Strang of Nova Scotia in an article today on Public Health Leaders facing threats and harassment. And you need to look no further than this CBRM Mayoral race to see something similar happening: “There’s a segment of the population that somehow feels it’s OK to treat women in leadership positions in a way that they wouldn’t think about a male leader.” https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/canada/he-was-looking-to-meet-me-public-health-leaders-face-threats-harassment-over-covid-19/ar-BB19xJOy?li=AAggNb9

This is a good article. Thanks for posting. I think that it is true that if this kind of threatening behaviour toward public figures leads to more of the same. We should all be vigilant.

Archie deserves more respect than this , we owe Archie and I hope the new government has a n ombudsman better than Archie

Michael, this is a sign that Archie MacKinnon is using as he campaigns on his Facebook page, where he has accused Mayor Clark and Councillor McDougall of stealing. We should all speak out against these dark campaign tactics so that our local campaigns improve. Many candidates are running positive, informative campaigns. Archie MacKinnon should as well.

We all know Archie isn’t going to win , my point is that we know how Archie operates and we also know he has been successful in getting people involved and asking the questions. What should have happened and didn’t was an audit of the CBRM finances . That’s not Archies fault. He tried and that’s why I said Archie deserves respect. Personally I think Archie would make a great Ombudsman in the next government. We need somebody to dig into any possible illegal activities happening. Of course he would need to carry this responsibility out with guide lines that would come with the position . I am voting for Amanda but I will not criticize Archie and I am not ashamed to thank Archie for all he has done . Archie has a heart of gold folks . Let’s not forget that.

One thing we can agree on is that transparency and audits are necessary.

Civility should be expected but respect must be earned. During this mayoral campaign, Archie has been attacking people, organizations, and anything that moves without taking a moment to observe or seek to understand. If you are not 100% with him, prepare to be attacked. How do you reconcile the fact that he says everyone is stealing money when his own (MP) campaign is under investigation for stolen money (tens of thousands of dollars based on what Archie said himself in the recent debate)?
