Canadian Sentenced To Death In Port of Sydney Sister City

A Canadian man, Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, was given the death sentence in China after being convicted as an "accessory to drug-smuggling." The court claimed that the man was involved in a plan to smuggle 222 kilograms of methamphetamine from China to Australia.

The death sentence was imposed on Schellenberg at the Dalian Intermediate People's Court in Dalian, China.

In December of 2015, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality joined a "sister-city" relationship with Dalian, a "port city".

In response to the news "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Canadian government would intercede on behalf of Schellenberg, as it is required to do anytime a Canadian faces the death penalty abroad."

Although the laws of Canada do not support capital punishment, and our length of incarceration seems to be much lower for crimes committed in our country, it's a very important point to consider. While there is concern about this man losing his life, one must pause to wonder what kind of impact 222 kilograms of methamphetamine would have on society. What criminal activity would it be a catalyst for? How many families would it destroy? How many lives would it take? This particular incident also has a political aspect. Some believe that it may be a retaliatory sentence for the arrest, by Canadian authorities, of a Chinese corporate executive wanted by the United States.
