The Cape Breton Highlanders professional basketball franchise announced their picks in the International Player Draft held by the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL) in Toronto on Sunday, November 20, 2016.

Highlanders President and General Manager, Tyrone Levingston, has been building out the team over the past months and only two picks were needed for the upcoming season.

The Highlanders' 1st round pick (2nd overall) was Mitchell Wiggins Jr (pictured above), a 6'6" Small forward from Toronto, Ontario who recently played at Southeastern University in Florida, an NAIA school. Wiggins played strong in the combines and is expected to be a solid player in the NBL. Wiggins is from an accomplished basketball family. His father Mitchell Wiggins Sr played in the NBA in the 1980s with the Chicago Bulls and Houston Rockets.  Brother Andrew Wiggins, currently plays in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves, where Andrew was the first overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft (only the second Canadian in history to be drafted first).

The Highlanders' 2nd round pick (7th) was Cameron Smith from North Carolina. Smith is a 6'5" forward that played university at Roanoke College in Virginia, an NCAA Division III school, where he averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.  Smith is described as a hard-nosed and tough player.
