On Monday, Tom Ayers, a striking Chronicle Herald journalist who writes for LocalXpress, indicated his frustration with learning that the Cape Breton Post staff would be handling delivery for the Chronicle Herald. Since then, the Post has been receiving some critical feedback from union supporters in Cape Breton. Some local readers have indicated that they intend to cancel their subscription.
The Sydney Typographical Union, Local 30460, released a statement on their Facebook page on Tuesday. This local represents the Cape Breton Post's unionized team.
President Steve MacInnis indicated that the decision was made by the parent company, Transcontinental Media. He suggests that union workers at the CB Post would face disciplinary action if they did not perform the delivery service. As they are members of the same parent union, the Communication Workers of America, MacInnis says that members of Local 30460 have shown support for the striking Chronicle Herald journalists.
"Sharing of services" is noted as standard industry practise across the country, and they acknowledge that the Herald also delivers for TC Media in other parts of Nova Scotia.
MacInnis closes his statement expressing concern with the recent calls to cancel Cape Breton Post subscriptions. He suggests that it could jeopardize the 50 union jobs that are held by CB Post employees. He provides various alternatives including contacting MLAs, the Premier, the Chronicle Herald, the Operations Manager for TC Media; and writing letters to the editor.
