On Wednesday (February 3, 2016), CBC Mainstreet Cape Breton host Wendy Bergfeldt spoke with Patrick Morello and Walter Kehm of the Toronto-based design firm LandInc.
LandInc was retained by businessman Tony Trigiani in 2011 to develop the concept for the Never Forgotten Memorial aka Mother Canada aka Stalin-in-a-Dress (bias alert) in Green Cove in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
The interview runs almost a full half hour and not only touches on the problems with the actual plan (such as it was) for the Green Cove statue, it includes some interesting thoughts from Kehm on the very notion of war memorials in 2016 (shorter version: Maya Lin's Vietnam Veterans' Memorial in Washington, D.C. changed everything).
Interestingly, while the CBC devoted half an hour to the subject, the Cape Breton Post has yet to cover the LandInc revelations and instead printed yet another pro-statue letter from the prolific Ray Stapleton, spokesperson for the People North of Smokey who support a monument at Green Cove (or PNOSWSAMAGC.) Although it must be acknowledged the Post has run a steady stream of letters both pro and con the Never Forgotten project.
The letter pooh-poohs concerns about the environmental impact of the statue – and makes for an interesting companion piece to the Bergfeldt interview.
