CBRM Compost Giveaway On Saturday, July 29th - 8 AM To 3 PM

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality FREE Compost Day is Saturday, July 29th, rain or shine. From 8am to 3:00pm residents can pick up compost free of charge.

Residents can visit as often as they like until 3pm.

The compost is located at the Waste Management Facility on Spar Road in Sydney.

You must bring your own transportation, gloves, shovels, and containers. Any exposed compost MUST be covered in a tarp or you will not be permitted to leave with it.

For more information, call (902) 567-1337 or visit the CBRM website's compost page.

Things to Know

  • The compost is nutrient rich, but certainly quite pungent smelling.
  • If you're transporting it inside of your vehicle, be sure to have it inside a sealed container. The scent lingers.
  • Large quantities on your property will continue to give off an unpleasant scent. Be considerate of your neighbors if you live in close proximity to other homes.
  • Most suggest the compost is best used during the next season, after letting it sit for a year.

What to Expect When You Arrive

  • When you arrive at the facility, your first stop will be on the scale.
  • Stop your car at the window. They ask for your license plate. No other information is required.
  • You then proceed and will see a small building (shed sized) with 1-2 employees. Their job is to direct those dropping off waste material to the right area. In your case, they'll point you in the direction of the compost area.
  • Take your time while driving in. The sorted trash piles are will not be in your path. However, the ground can be rough in patches as it's a dirt area with lots of traffic from cars and heavy equipment.
  • You'll discover several piles of compost along the outside edge of a storage building.
  • From there, you and others will be loading up your containers, trailer, truck bed, or bags with as much compost as you desire.
  • On the way out, you must stop at the scale again. You give your license plate number before leaving. This helps the CBRM track the change in weight per vehicle. For trash drop offs, this is how they know the total quantity (in weight) that comes in everyday, and how they bill construction companies dump fees.
