Internationally renowned journalist and author Gwynne Dyer will be giving the 20th annual J.B. McLachlan Lecture on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Cape Breton University.
The annual lecture honours the life and legacy of J.B. McLachlan, a Scottish immigrant and coal miner who arrived in Cape Breton in 1902 and helped lead District 26 of the United Mine Workers of America until his death in 1937. The event also celebrates the J.B. McLachlan scholarship, which is awarded annually to a university-bound Cape Breton student who shows exceptional academic and leadership abilities.
“We are proud to recognize the McLachlan family for their amazing endowment that provides a renewable $5000 entrance scholarship to students from Cape Breton,” says Andrew Parnaby, Dean, School of Arts & Social Sciences.
This year’s lecture, held in partnership with the CBU School of Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of Humanities, the Department of L’nu, Political and Social Studies, the CBU Library and the J.B. McLachlan Commemorative Society is open to all who are interested in the broad undercurrents of political life affecting the world today.
Dyer, referred to by the National Post as one of Canada’s best known defence and foreign policy analysts, will be presenting “The Populist Revolt: Its Causes and Cure” at 7:00 p.m. in the Royal Bank Lecture Theatre, followed by a Q&A period. This is event is free of charge and open to the public.
“We at CBU hope that through this lecture we give the people of Cape Breton the opportunity to gather at CBU in order to hear a world-class journalist and social commentator speak about some of the most pressing issues and concerns affecting politics and government in the world today. It is an opportunity for people to be informed, challenged and inspired,” says David Johnson, CBU Professor of Political Science.
