Entrepreneurship Amidst an Aging Demographic

Entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes, however there appears to be a fair amount of age discrimination when it comes to the programs out there supporting the Startup community.  It appears that life stops at 40 if you want to get a Startup off the ground.   In Cape Breton, we need to celebrate all entrepreneurs and the programs should be inclusive.  Do you agree?

I feel there is a huge generation gap in the business community around here. There is this young, 30-something optimistic startup community that wants to create their own opportunities in Cape Breton, and then there's an older perspective of waiting for outside forces to come in and provide opportunities for us. The issue is this new, young contingent of bright eyed, bushy tailed go-getters have little money, influence, or support. I think with UIT and a more cohesive Startup community forming on our island, things could be changing for the better.

Not disagreeing Rory, but as a startup founder myself, being over 40 excludes you from the funding. That I think is an issue in Cape Breton, where there are fewer young people and where a more senior group of entrepreneurs need support and development. May be able to create jobs for the younger generation.

Ah, I see. I misread the part about life stopping at 40. Do we have enough specialized grant writers in the startup community? It seems those are the skills we need to get a lot of these communal ideas off the ground.

Until UIT came around, I sort of had the impression (valid or not) that there wasn't experienced based knowledge transfer happening here. I think private investors are always better than gov investors because they have real skin in the game. Uhma achieving what he did was fantastic because he becomes a proof of concept that we can have the IT hits here as well. I've been to Silicon Valley. They don't have anything different in their caffeine than we do. They just pay a heck of a lot more per square foot of office space - and have access to huge funds where a million bucks here or there is just a scratch ticket. ;) So I see UIT as a turning point here. If we're crossing the chasm, they are the ones filling up the jet packs. We just need their alumni to turn out a few significant hits. Colin and Brian of Phased.io are extremely talented, and my money is on these guys. Without evening considering their biz strategy with phased.io, Vegas odds are on them breaking out. If this one doesn't take off, they have lots of pivots in them. Marcato seems to be a shining star now as they made a move into Enterprise that seems to have paid off and are apparently heading towards profitability fast. Spark CB did cover a diverse range of ages. So that one seems independent of age. However, it is also capped. If you don't get the top award, you have to be extremely strategic with the funds. ;) However, I'm never going to count anyone out of the game. Technology isn't going to favor youthful participants as much as it did in the past. Each generation of technology becomes more accessible. As that happens, the time required and friction of getting up to speed is lessened for all participants and the young start to lose some of their advantage in that regard. The dynamic will change. But key is that each person approach opportunities best suited to where they are positioned, be it age or any of the multivariate factors.

Please take a look at the age distribution in Cape Breton. http://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2011/as-sa/fogs-spg/Facts-cma-eng.cfm?LANG=Eng&GK=CMA&GC=225 People over 40 constitute the largest segments. How many would be entrepreneurs exist within this group? By the way, some of the most technically savvy folks I know are not 20 somethings.......we need to exploit this group as entrepreneurs who could create jobs for young people. The point I am making, it's not the omission of youth, it's the inclusion of people over 40, regardless of the program.

One thing is for certain: There are not enough people here in the startup community that we can afford to exclude anyone. If lumped together, we could be one mid-sized startup. ;)

Chris, where are you finding a 40 limit on funding?
Christian Murphy My Post Follow Me
It's not just funding, quite a few government programs are directed at a youth audience.....not all, my point isn't just about funding, it's about getting everyone working together with programs that don't use age to create a barrier.
Mathew Georghiou Follow Me
There are all sorts of guidelines on various targeted programs from age to gender to ethnicity and more. It's unavoidable. Not a battle I would choose to focus on.

Even though I think there's a generation gap around here when it comes to some things, it's not nearly as prevalent as other places I've lived. Down in Georgia, the Gen X'ers were all convinced the Baby Boomers robbed them of a future. In my opinion, this place seems more cohesive because it doesn't feel like anybody is robbing anybody, since we're all in the same boat, and nobody seems to be prospering off the backs of anybody else. Maybe this is more of my senseless optimism, but I see less finger pointing here than anywhere else I've been.
