In the spring of 2018, audiences at the Highland Arts Theatre were introduced to, what many patrons still consider, their favourite show the HAT has ever done. The show starred homegrown talents Emily O’Leary, Morgan Reid, and Katherine Woodford, all under the guidance of director Ron Jenkins and music director Christopher Mounteer.
The show was Oscar Wilde and Leslie Arden’s The Happy Prince and after 4 years it’s finally making its way back to the Highland Arts Theatre!
This family-friendly Canadian musical is based on Oscar Wilde’s children’s story of the same name and was adapted by Leslie Arden shortly after she had the opportunity to study with the late-great Stephen Sondheim at Oxford University. The cast of this show shares a studious nature with the their playwright.
Since 2018, Reid has began her Doctor of Musical Arts in Voice Performance at the University of Toronto and O’Leary began her Master of Music in Musical Theatre Vocal Performance / Vocal Pedagogy at New York University. Woodford has also been keeping very busy during that time as a mainstay in the Cape Breton theatre scene as well the music scene with her crowd favourite alternative rock band New Draft. All three original cast members return for this new run of the show along with Jenkins and Mounteer.
The show was supposed to return in May 2021 and again in January of 2022 but saw its run cancelled from the lockdowns brought on by the surge of the Delta variant and Omicron variant respectively. Now it is finally making its return to the HAT mainstage for the end of August closing out the downtown Sydney theatres summer season. The show will be offered as part of the charity’s Radical Access Program, meaning tickets are free of charge (though there is an optional prompt of a suggested donation on the theatre’s site for those who can spare it in exchange for a tax deductible receipt).
The Happy Prince, opens August 24th and continues through August 28th at 7:30PM with an additional show at 3:30PM on the 28th. A web-stream will also be made available of the show from September 9th-11th on the HAT’s YouTube and Facebook.
Tickets are available now and can all be booked online at www.highlandartstheatre.com, by phone at (902) 565-3637, or in person at the HAT's box office at 40 Bentinck Street in Downtown Sydney between noon and 6:00PM.
