For the six graduating officers of the Maritime Police Academy, Margaree has everything they need to complete their training: picturesque rolling hills, complete isolation, and a mock murder gone awry.
When one of his team members mysteriously disappears in the middle of the night, Derrick Stone must use all his training to find the missing officer and lead his team to safety. But as the bodies begin to pile up, he is forced to face the thought he pushed to the back of his mind: the killer just might be one of their own.
EXCERPT FROM CODE 900
A slate grey sky blanketed the ancient tombstones in muted hues. Deep shadows slithered across the skeletons of fallen leaves like a silent predator stalking its prey. Naked trees that once sheltered the long-forgotten burial ground stood drowsing as morning’s first light struggled against the gloomy haze. Ashen, crumbling leaves carpeted the forgotten cemetery as heavy, black police shoes blemished the serene, earthen floor.
A bundle was dropped effortlessly with a sickening thud. Blood dripped from the rolled-up carpet and painted the withering leaves in crimson. A small shovel bit into the consecrated ground. The sound of metal scraping against rock disturbed the morning calm.
A mouthful of silence hung in the air when the blood-soaked carpet twitched. A groan sounded from within, breaking the deafening quiet. Seconds later, the bundle moved hysterically as a woman’s head broke free from its cocoon. Her eyes, wet with fear and confusion, glared with hate as she recognized her assailant. Her blood simultaneously chilled and boiled as the metal blade of the raised shovel glistened briefly in the growing light.
A scream punctuated the crushing blow.
