Good people will be leaving Cape Breton

After reading the doctors post about the proposed changes to walking trails into ATV trails and the follow up by Joseph Campbell "We will lose good people in CB" I felt I must add my comments as well.

I am a US citizen who is wanting to relocate to Cape Breton Island for my retirement. I follow all the news there daily.

The fact that good doctors like this one and others are probably going to leave the area is very disheartening. I am a professional fine artist and past gallery owner. Still very active in the arts. The main reason I want to move to CB is for the unspoiled areas for painting outdoors, walking trails and general outdoor activities that do no require polluting, noisy ATVs and motorbikes. In taking away these quiet, wildlife and bird filled sanctuaries and replacing them with these groups is insane! One can not share a trail with them while trying to walk or birdwatch or just have some peace and quiet time in a beautiful wood. What is the council possible thinking could be the advantage of this?

This alone causes me to have many second thoughts about moving myself and my business to Cape Breton, the loss of good doctors and other professionals to the area for the same reasons should be enough to make those who make the decisions stop and think what is the benefit to the greater good, certainly not making walking trails into mechanized vehicle shared trails. Laughable if not so sad.

Ms. Duncan, Please don't be discouraged. We are not the only ones fighting this battle across Canada/USA. Cape Breton is a beautiful place and there are many like myself trying to keep it that way. I feel that the Mayor and Council of CBRM made a mistake and I am trying to help them realize it and others to avoid it. Mistakes can be fixed. It just takes a sign that says "No Motorized Vehicles" and there are many of these already. I am glad you added your point of view here but again please don't be discouraged.

Mr. Campbell, Thank you for your reply and don't worry, it is discouraging but that won't deter me from trying to make my home in your beautiful area! You are so right that this is everywhere today. I left my lovely small village of Bluffton, SC because of the rampant coastal development going on there. Now live in the gorgeous mountains of Western NC but pining for the ocean and rivers. As soon as the borders open again I will be right there petitioning council with you all who value what you have in that magical place.
