Helicopter Photo of Sydney Flood

Annotations added by goCapeBreton.com

These photos were released by Nova Scotia Power on Tuesday afternoon with this message:

Helicopter crews sent us these photos from their air patrols in Sydney. Flooding is extensive and damage in many areas in the eastern part of the province has been difficult to assess. As field crews are able to gain access to the damage, some estimated restoration times in the area have changed. The majority of customers in the east and Cape Breton will now have power restored by 11 am Thursday morning; some customers will have their power restored before that time. Crews will work tirelessly until all customers have been restored. Please stay safe and report any downed wires or other electrical safety hazards to us at 1-877-428-6004.

As indicated (see page 161) in the Municipal Planning Strategy for the CBRM, this flood zone was a known risk area with annual flooding. This is why we cannot defer the repair and upgrade of our municipal infrastructure. That is our infrastructure deficit. Bank debt is an entirely different thing. We may look good on paper, but have disaster zones in our community just waiting for the right combination of factors to reveal themselves. I spoke to a retired CBRM Public Works engineer last week who told me that storm water run off is a major problem we haven't dealt with. With the levels of rain we had on Thanksgiving, it was revealed in the worst possible way. http://www.cbrm.ns.ca/images/Planning/CBRM_MPS_with_amendments_to_July_5th_2016.pdf We simply cannot neglect our infrastructure. What is the market value of homes anywhere in this flood zone now?
