The Cape Breton Highlanders professional basketball team were in action on Wednesday morning in front of over 4,300 fans at Centre 200. It was a special Youth Day in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cape Breton - The Whitney Pier Youth Club. Several schools bused in students to attend the game for free.

The game was the second of a double header against the Moncton Magic. The night before, the Magic squeaked out a 1-point win. Wednesday’s game ended up being similar with a tightly-contested back-and-forth match with the Magic pulling out another last-minute win 104 to 101.
Newcomer Bruce Massey had a big game for the Highlanders, scoring 35 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists, while gathering 7 steals. Shane Osayande, standing at only 6’6”, was a force inside, scoring 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocks, including hitting all 10 of his free throws. Aly Ahmed added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Duke Mondy had 7 points and 6 assists.
The Magic were lead by the NBL Canada’s all time leading scorer, Anthony Anderson, who hit for 28 points while collecting 9 rebounds. Al Stewart had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 assists. Terry Thomas, a native of Dartmouth, NS, scored 19 points and 5 rebounds.
In addition to creating awareness for The Boys and Girls Clubs of Cape Breton - The Whitney Pier Youth Club, money was raised through a 50/50 draw and by raffling 13 special edition green jerseys worn by the Highlanders during the game. Bench Bullying shared an anti-bullying message at halftime, and various stations shared helpful life information for students.
The next Cape Breton Highlanders home game is Tuesday, December 26 on Boxing Day at 7PM versus the Saint John Riptide. The Highlanders play in Halifax this Friday, December 22 at 7PM and the game can be watched live by visiting HighlandersBasketball.ca and clicking the YouTube link.
