The Cape Breton Highlanders are issuing this news release to announce the team’s first ever head coach and first two signed players, and the availability of season ticket sales starting Tuesday, October 11.
Head Coach
The Head Coach is Dean Murray from South Carolina. Murray has over 25 years of coaching experience, including NCAA Division I schools, professional basketball leagues in China and Korea, and the NBA Development League. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Masters in Education. Murray believes in an aggressive offensive style that starts with a controlled fast break, balanced with aggressive man-to-man defense.
Murray added, "I would like to thank the Ownership Group of the Cape Breton Highlanders, and Team President Tyrone Levingston for this great opportunity they have presented to me. It is very special when you have the chance to be a part of a ‘first’ and I feel really proud to be named the first Head Coach in the history of this franchise. I am looking forward to meeting our fans and helping to build a great foundation for the future of our team on Cape Breton Island. The first season is going to be a great experience for everyone and I am really excited about getting started."
Players
NBL All-Canadian player Shaquille Keith, from Brampton, Ontario signed on after the Highlanders traded a 1st round round pick (2nd pick overall) to the Windsor Express. Keith is a former CBU Caper who most recently had an impressive rookie season in the NBL, ranking in the top 10 in several league statistics, including steals, blocks, assists, and 3-point field goals. Keith is 6'5", 200 lbs and 23 years old.
Jimmy Dorsey from Baltimore MD is a familiar name in Cape Breton, after playing 5 seasons with the CBU Capers, finishing in 2013. Dorsey led the capers to two AUS championships while earning and AUS MVP award, and was twice named as a CIS national first-team all-Canadian. He was also named a CBU Athlete of the Year. Most recently, Dorsey played professional basketball in Germany. Dorsey is 6’2, 190 lbs, and 27 years old.
Highlanders President and General Manager, Tyrone Levingston, said, “It’s shaping up to be an amazing year for our club and fans. Fear the Cape!” The Highlanders play in the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL). The NBL is entering its sixth season with 10 teams vying for the title from Cape Breton to Ontario. The Highlanders are set to begin their inaugural season December 26, 2016 at Centre 200.
Tickets
Season tickets go on sale starting Tuesday, October 11. The first 20 people* to purchase Season Tickets will be awarded a special Highlanders Gift Package.
A Season Ticket includes admission to all 20 regular-season home games with your choice of seat, discounts on merchandise, access to exclusive events, and option to purchase same seat for exhibition and playoff games. Season runs Dec 2016 to Jun 2017.
