The Cape Breton Highlanders ended their inaugural season on a high note with a victory over the PEI Island Storm. In a game that kept the crowd cheering, the Highlanders took the win 104 – 102.
The Highlanders led the Island Storm 59 – 45 going into the half. The Storm fought back hard to close the gap to two points with one minute left in the fourth quarter, but the Highlanders maintained the lead to take the win.
Leading the Highlanders was Deronn Scott with 29 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds. Billy Rush nailed 27 points and 11 rebounds. Anthony ‘Sky’ Walker nailed 17 points and 8 rebounds.
Al Stewart led the Island Storm with 31 points, 7 assists, and 10 rebounds. Al Richter picked up 20 points with 7 rebounds. The Storm finished the season in third place in the Atlantic Division.
The Highlanders finished the season with a record of 15 wins and 25 losses, placing them in fifth place in the Atlantic Division. The team was only one win away from the playoffs and potentially third place in the division, a strong showing for the inaugural season.
Season two will start at the end of 2017.
The Cape Breton Highlanders Franchise is one of 10 professional basketball teams in the National Basketball League of Canada. The Highlanders’ ownership group is comprised of successful business and community leaders in Cape Breton and led by President and General Manager Tyrone Levingston.
