Cape Breton’s eighth annual contemporary art festival - Lumière - will take place in Sydney on Sept. 27, 28 and 29. The signature art-at-night event – expected to draw crowds of up to 15,000 – will take place in the Sydney Waterfront District on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 7:00PM-midnight. Organizers anticipate this to be the biggest and brightest event to date.
The Lumière festival brings art to the streets, sidewalks, shop fronts, and public spaces of Sydney Waterfront District. Each year, the festival presents fresh, contemporary art projects from local and national artists that transform Sydney’s civic spaces.
Melissa Kearney, Event Coordinator for Lumière, says, "We're so humbled by how much love our community has for this event. It gives the the volunteer board all the energy they need to make this event what it is. From completing funding applications to connecting with children to participate in workshops, there's a lot of work that goes into each edition of Lumiere, but it's our artists, who put the most special time and effort into delivering us an evening in downtown unlike any other."
The festival kicks off on Thursday Sept. 27th with a free performance by classically trained operatic tenor and composer, Jeremy Dutcher. Jeremy blends his Wolastoq First Nation roots into the music he creates, resulting in distinct musical aesthetics that shape-shift between classical, traditional and pop to form something entirely new.
The Lumière artist talks will be held on Friday Sept. 28th from 6:30-8:00PM, at St. Patrick’s Museum. All are welcome to come down for a coffee and hear from our artist-in-residence Angie Arsenault, local artist Alison Uhma and Spotlight artist Michelle Sylliboy as they discuss their work and artistic process.
An exciting slate of workshops and public events will be held throughout the week in the CBRM leading up to the art-at-night event including a Light Up the Night bike Parade, a Komqwejwi’kaskil (Heiroglyphics) workshop, and more!
