McHappy Day 2019

Over the past number of years, McHappy day has been supporting the Pediatrics TLC Fund and priority equipment on the pediatrics unit. In fact, more than $190,000 has been raised over the past decade on McHappy Day to support sick kids and their families. This year, the funds are going elsewhere and I think you’d be interested in this story. Wayne Kennerknecht, owner of the local McDonald’s restaurants, recently told us: “My son died this year. For seven whole minutes his heart stopped and all we heard was ‘code blue’ coming over the hospital speaker. On January 12 of this year, our son Justin suffered a stroke at only 33 years old and they didn’t expect him to survive. We spent 20 days in the Intensive Care Unit with Justin lying unconscious and often lifeless. When his doctors assessed him, the prognosis was grim. The expectation was that if he survived, his sight may never return, he’d be paralyzed for life or that he may never be able to communicate with his family again. The worst day of my life was when we were told that we may have to consider taking him off of life support.” After their experience in the Intensive Care Unit, The Kennerknecht family decided they wanted to fund equipment and family comforts for the ICU. This year, McHappy Day will be funding a new portable ultrasound device as well as fold out chairs that becomes beds, so that family can stay close when patients are in intensive care situations. They also intend to fund other comforts for families to ensure that when some of Cape Breton’s sickest patients are in need, their families can comfortably focus on their loved one’s well-being. In total, the goal is to raise more than $60,000. McHappy Day will occur on May 8, 2019, from 6:00 a.m. onward, Learn more about Justin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWaCGDe-mDo
