2nd Annual Michelle Curtis Memorial Washer Toss Tournament

~One day tournament to support Palliative Care C.B. and the B.E.C. Scholastic Fund~

CALLING ALL BACKYARD WASHER-TOSS ENTHUSIASTS, SPECTATORS AND WANNABES!
The family and friends of the late Michelle Curtis are once again hosting a washer toss tournament in Michelle’s memory, for two great causes, and you’re not going to want to miss it! The event takes place on August 12 at the Knight of Columbus (KOC) grounds, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.

Building on the success of last year, the organizing committee for the fundraising tournament have added more washer toss boxes to accommodate additional participants. Kendra Baldwin, spokesperson for the committee and sister of Michelle, says nobody knew what to expect last year, “We made a certain number of boxes and decided if it was a well attended event, we’d add more the next time. So we’re really excited to say we had to do just that! Our community embraced the idea and for that we are extremely grateful,“ said Kendra.

In 2016, the K.O.C. grounds in New Waterford hosted 100 participants and just as many spectators for the one day event, which raised nearly $6000 to support the Breton Education Centre Scholastic Fund and the important work of Palliative Care, Cape Breton; two organizations which were very important to Michelle in her lifetime.

Michelle Curtis lost her life saving the lives of others, in August 2015. Michelle was a huge community supporter, was a respected Palliative Care Nurse at the Cape Breton Regional hospital and was actively involved in the lives of her two children; coaching their sports teams and supporting their achievements in academia. It is for these reasons, Michelle would be happy to know, a home-grown community event - geared around fun - would take place in her memory.

Organizers for the tournament say washer toss was the perfect choice because it allows for the inclusion of everyone, noting the game can be played by every age or athletic ability. “Michelle would admit to you that she wasn’t even that great at playing washer toss,” laughs Kendra. “But it didn’t matter. For her it was all about the fun and the social bonding. That’s why we know it’s a great choice of fundraiser in her name.”

Family and friends gathered to build custom washer-toss boxes for the event and have assigned each team name based on Michelle’s favourite songs. So, whether you’re a self-proclaimed backyard champion, or you’re just out to have some fun raising money for a few great causes, sign up today!

Teams will be assigned the day of the tournament and a full list of rules will be given to all teams that day. Maybe you’ll be part of the “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere” team, or the “Purple Rain” team. Spaces are already filling up, and there is a limited area to fill.

Registration is only $20 per person. The event will be held on the grounds of the Knights of Columbus hall (K.O.C) on Plummer Avenue New Waterford, Saturday, August 12, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a barbecue on site for people to purchase hotdogs or hamburgers, and there will also be beverages available for purchase. The event is licensed, so is open to those 19 and over.

REGISTER EARLY ONLINE: E-transfer $20 fee with full name to [email protected] (Please note: Online registration only considered valid with successful e-transfer payment).
