New Dawn Homecare and Guest Home Get National Certification

New Dawn Homecare and Guest Home Receive National Certification from Accreditation Canada

New Dawn Homecare and the New Dawn Guest Home are excited to announce that they have successfully completed Accreditation Canada’s Primer program.

Accreditation Canada is a national organization that sets standards for quality and safety in healthcare and accredits healthcare organizations in Canada and around the world based on how well they meet those standards. The accreditation program is recognized as best in class internationally and is designed to improve client outcomes and health system performance.

The Primer Award, which sees New Dawn Homecare and New Dawn Guest Home join local hospitals, long-term care facilities, and the VON - the areas only other accredited health care providers – is the culmination of eighteen months of organizational and policy development.

“We are honoured to be granted accreditation through this highly-regarded program. We are proud that our work is making a difference in advancing the health of our community and that our commitment to quality and safety is being recognized,” says Sabrina Vatcher, Director of New Dawn Healthcare. “We are equally proud of the efforts our staff make to ensure quality and safe patient care is our top priority. They more than anyone deserve our gratitude for all that they do to support our clients and families.”

During their three-day onsite visit in late February, the survey team from Accreditation Canada evaluated New Dawn Homecare’s and Guest Home’s programs and services, reviewed policies and procedures against practices, and led a number of discussions with staff, management, clients, and families.

Among the report’s findings, are that client-centered care is the foundation of New Dawn Homecare and Guest Home, that the organizations continue to be creative and innovative in meeting the needs of the community, and that both have excellent staff and an excellent quality improvement and client safety plan.

“Participation in the accreditation program is an important part of the growth and the evolution of New Dawn Homecare and the New Dawn Guest Home,” says New Dawn President Rankin MacSween. “From a small undertaking almost three decades ago to where we are today – a 30-bed residential care facility and the Island’s largest private Homecare company employing more than 70 caregivers in multiple communities – our clients and their wellbeing have always been at the centre of it all.”

New Dawn Homecare is now one of only two private homecare agencies in all of Nova Scotia with an Accreditation Canada award, while the New Dawn Guest Home is the only Residential Care Facility (for persons with disabilities) with an Accreditation Canada award on Cape Breton Island.

New Dawn Homecare and Guest Home now turn their attention to Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum program – the next step in ensuring quality and safety throughout both organizations – from governance and leadership to direct care and infrastructure.
