NS Homecoming For Governor General Award Nominee Jivesh Parasram

Jivesh Parasram was raised in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia but moved away not long after graduating. Since leaving the province he’s pursued acting and theatre, finding great success along the way. Now he’s returning to the province, stopping at the Highland Arts Theatre and bringing with him his Governor General-nominated play Take d Milk, Nah?

"It's gonna freak you out, and it's going to make you laugh, and it's going to make you cry, and it's going to challenge you,” said director Tom Arthur Davis.

Take d Milk, Nah? is a funny, fresh, and skeptical take on the identity play, where performer-playwright Parasram blends personal storytelling and ritual to offer the Hin-dos and Hin-don’ts within the intersections of all of his highly hyphenated cultures. Jiv is “Canadian.” And “Indian.” And “Hindu.” And “West Indian.” “Trinidadian,” too. Or maybe he’s just colonized.

“This is sort of the last of our ‘shows that were supposed to happen before COVID and got delayed’ and we couldn’t be more ecstatic to be bringing Jivesh’s brilliant and hilarious show to Cape Breton audiences,” said HAT Artistic and Executive Director Wesley J. Colford. “This show asks us to examine Canadian identity and our colonial history in a way that manages to keep us laughing through the discomfort a performance like this could elicit. You really couldn’t ask for a better tour guide than Jivesh.”

When Jivesh was asked what he would say to anyone on the fence about attending the show he wrote, “It’s a really fun show. I think a lot of the coverage and reviews have focused on some of the heavier content - but it’s mostly jokes. There is audience interaction, which - hey - I like in my own shows but I am not super into as an audience member so I get it if that’s not a selling point - but it’s not too extreme or anything. Like I’m not gonna bring you on stage to do a scene with me. Also if you don’t know much about Indo-Caribbean people, or Hinduism, or Trinidad - there’s genuinely a lot of stuff you can learn about in it. I think just - come! Like, unless you hate comedy I guess?”

Take d Milk, Nah? runs on April 5th to 8th at 7:30pm with am added matinee at 2:00pm on the 8th. Directed by Arthur Davis and starring Jivesh Parasram. A web- stream of the play will take place exclusively on the theatre’s YouTube channel on April 30th at 7:30PM, AST.
