As the NSEF prepares to seek help from the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, we are investigating many types of “discrimination”. The term “Geographical Discrimination” is real and when you investigate the meaning below, you will see that it is something that is real for many in Cape Breton. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms Challenge is another area we are investigating and we will keep you informed of our progress. Geographical discrimination is a form of discrimination based on a person's location or region of origin, leading to unfair treatment or exclusion. It can manifest in various ways, including denying opportunities or treating individuals differently due to their geographic background. Here's a more detailed explanation: • Definition: Geographical discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly or denied opportunities because of their location, region of origin, or country of origin. • Examples: This can include situations where: • A candidate is rejected for a job because they live in a specific area. • A person is denied access to services or resources based on their location. • Individuals are treated differently based on stereotypes or prejudices associated with a particular region. • Underlying Factors: Geographical discrimination can be rooted in: • Racial, regional, or country-specific prejudices and stereotypes. • Convenience factors or a perception of a region as undesirable. • Impact: Geographical discrimination can have a significant impact on individuals, hindering their access to opportunities, resources, and fair treatment.
