NSEF still waiting for answers to questions provided on April 5th

The Nova Scotians for Equalization Fairness is still waiting for the answers to a list of questions that were provided on April 5th to MP Mark Eyking. Several phone calls were made by many of our board members but still nothing. We reached out to Rodger Cuzner's office this morning for a meeting since Mark Eyking is refusing to provide answers to the questions we provided. What is wrong with our political system when simple questions can not be answered by the federal government or its representatives (MP's)

We are providing the questions again that we are looking for answers:

Charles Sampson’s

What is the federal government’s financial evidence it can provide that transferring billions of Equalization Payments unconditionally (over $30 billion the past 20 years) to Nova Scotia governments has, in fact, met its legal obligation to ALL Nova Scotians pursuant to the Constitution Act, 1982?

Why, and for what reasons, was the federal Equalization payments that were enshrined in s.36 of the Constitution Act 1982, permitted to be transferred “unconditionally” to the eligible provinces?

Russ Green’s

Why do you feel that this is a Provincial Government problem when it is the Federal Governments responsibility to protect our Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as our Constitutional Rights?

How far does this have to go before the Federal Government will get involved?

Martha Ross’s

The Nova Scotia Provincial Government states that municipalities are not entitled to Federal Equalization Funding. Please explain?

Cape Breton Regional Municipality, as well as other municipalities in Nova Scotia need help to survive. When will this start?

Dr. Maroun’s

Why are our tax rates so high when the Province receives funding to help with this? Does the federal government have any measures in place to protect the people of Canada from the province just stealing our money?

How can the Federal Government provide funding to build infrastructure in a certain region and it does not happen? 30 years of funding provided and zero infrastructures built. Please explain?

Where does the government stand on the moral issue of high poverty in an area that is to receiving funding and yet it does not make it to said region? What safe guards does the Federal Government have in place to protect the Canadian Citizens?

Dr. Guy’s

The federal government calculates the total equalization transfer to NS based on the relative weakness in fiscal tax capacity of our municipalities. The transfer to the CBRM doesn't cover that weakness. And it is clawed back and further weakens it by exceeding the amount transferred. We need a federal audit of our transfer to track how the money is being appropriated once received by the government of Nova Scotia. As our MP will you arrange for one through the Department of Finance?

Why doesn't the federal government transfer the 26% of its Equalization money --designated to address municipal tax weakness--directly to Nova Scotia's municipalities? Your Equalization transfer has been misappropriated by the provincial government.

JR MacDonald

Where does Mark Eyking stand with regards to the constitution section 36.2 ?
Do you respect the Charter of Rights in section 15.1?

The NSEF is not going to stop trying to get the answers to these questions at all. If the government is waiting for us to just go away, well we are not. This is our island and future we are talking about and we can not afford anymore of this silence on the important issues.

You are right Fred but this is a serious issue. We have our own government breaking the law and when we ask for help from the Federal Government, they just ignore us. They are just asking for separation and a lawsuit. If you could see the emails and letters here at the NSEF to the Federal Government over the past 8 months on this issue, you wouldn't believe it.
