OBITUARY: Peter Moran Sheehan

Peter Moran Sheehan, of Belle Cote and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully on July 13th, 2018, with his wife and children by his side. He was 74 years old. Born May 21st, 1944 in Sydney, NS. Peter was the son of Thomas Moran Sheehan and Neilla Alberta (Morrison) Sheehan. He was born an only child; a fact he seemed compelled to counteract by making friends wherever he went and by adopting the eleven brothers and sisters of his beloved wife and partner in life, Joan. He and Joan were married for 51 years. Peter spent his childhood growing up in Margaree and Belle Cote. He moved to Halifax to attend St. Mary’s University, and later worked as an administrator with CMHC. As his career moved, so did he, prompting moves back and forth between the cities of Ottawa, Halifax and Edmonton, until his retirement when he returned to Nova Scotia. Once here, he enjoyed being back where he belonged and, with Joan, they spent summers renovating his family homestead, the former “Ocean Haven Bed & Breakfast,” where he shared his love of the place with visitors from far and wide. He loved to travel, having visited every province and territory in Canada, often camping, stopping to take pictures. Wherever he travelled, Peter insisted on taking the back roads often over-looked by others. He was an information hound, insisting on knowing everything that was going on in the world. He was known for his natural curiosity about people and places. Peter had a knack for fact-finding, making connections and sharing his knowledge with others. He passed his love for Belle Cote and Margaree onto his children and helped them build cottages ther, where they could enjoy summers together. Peter was the consummate family man, always putting his family first, and always ensuring they received the best of care. We will miss his ready smile, his gentle wit, andhis willingness to offer unsolicited advice. He is survived by his wife, Joan Coral (Woods) Sheehan; his children Shaun Sheehan (Stephanie Bird), Jo-Anne Sheehan (Toni Reid) and grandchildren, Chapin and Brogan Sheehan.

The family would like to thank all family, extended family and close friends who showed their love and support by sending messages, prayers and by visiting Peter in the hospital during his last days. Thanks also to the nurses and doctors of the Halifax Infirmary’s Neurology Unit, for their outstanding compassion and care. Visitation will take place at St. Michael’s Parish Hall, East Margaree, Tuesday, June 19th from 3-6 PM. Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, June 20th at 11:00 AM with burial in the church cemetery. Reception in the Parish Hall to follow burial. No flowers-Mass cards only.
