After countless hours of research and planning I have distilled my platform down to six essential pillars. I invite discussion on each of the topics, and will elaborate on them in the coming days. Stay tuned!
In no particular order ...
Renewable Energy Strategy
A comprehensive municipal renewable energy strategy for CBRM would reduce electricity bills, create employment opportunities, raise the standard of living, and reverse the trend of out migration.
Rural Internet Upgrades
Rural CBRM communities have been promised faster, more reliable internet for over a decade. It’s time for CBRM to withdraw from the provincial program administered by Develop NS and tap directly into the federal government’s $750-million Broadband Fund.
Transparency
As a public body, CBRM is subject to the Government of Nova Scotia's Freedom of Information and Privacy Act. All public documents should be readily available, free of charge, in a searchable on-line database.
Rail Revitalization
CBRM must 1) compel the provincial government to fund necessary rail upgrades, 2) demand that Geneseee & Wyoming end crossing fees for landowners, and 3) ensure that G&W is paying appropriate property taxes for rail lines/beds.
Poverty & Affordable Housing
CBRM has no official policy or strategy to address the increasing rates of poverty in our community. There is no excuse. This must change.
Equalization Fairness
I am not in a position to say if equalization payments to CBRM are fair or unfair. However, the Mayor and Council have the power to call for an independent audit - which will be high on my list.
