The following is related to: MLAs raise concerns about whether ATVs will be allowed on more parts of Confederation Trail by Brittany Spencer · CBC News
In PEI, elected officials are doing the right thing questioning whether or not ATVs should tolerated on the Confederation Trail.
Progressive Conservative MLA Brad Trivers actually knows what residents in his area really want:
"They believe that ATVs should not share the Confederation Trail with pedestrians and cyclists. They believe it's too dangerous."
The following statement by the President of the ATV Federation in PEI (Paul Wilbert) is ,IMHO, deceptive in the least. The reason I feel this way is that there is no evidence to back up what he is saying but there is lots of evidence to the contrary.
"Wilbert said other provinces allow access to the Trans Canada Trail and it works. He added if the sport is legalized and ATVs are allowed access to the Confederation Trail, then the mentality will change."
Antisocial behavior like deception is why any non-profit should not get any public money at all. Note: ATV registration fees are indeed public money like all other public money. ATV groups should be truthful and transparent when it comes to our communities or loose their non-profit status. They should not get any public money or access to trails if they are going to go against the wishes of communities, deceive us and cause contention the community. Public money shouldn't be used against community well-being.

In Nova Scotia we should defund the ATV Association of Nova Scotia and return the registration fees back to general revenue and let the ATV groups fend for themselves like other important organizations that are socially minded and actually do good in our communities. None of them have direct access to public money like ATVANS. Taxpayers were nice to let the ATV groups have access to public money but it is time to reevaluate that generous program.
Giving ATVs access to public trails does not work in CBRM. We see and increase of ATV related crime of 10 times since the Mayor turned our Active Transportation Trail into a RAT (Residential ATV Trail). You can say the mentality changed all right...for the worst. We see destruction of private property, drug distribution using the trail, contention/threats, environmental damage, excessive litter, reduced property value along the trail, diminished quality of life in the communities that the trail passes through, we see a disinterest in the trail by many residents because of motorized vehicles on the trail, and disturbed ecological systems. I guess what Mr. Wilbert means is that it works for him and his organization because it does not work for the communities around the trails!
In Cape Breton elected officials (MPs, MLAs or Councillors) are nowhere to be found for 4 years now on issues around the CBRM RAT (Residential ATV Trail) sanctioned by the Mayor against the wishes of the residents of CBRM. There was no vote in council to turn a planned Active Transportation Trail into an ATV trail. The residents do not want motorized vehicles on the trail and have said so on record but the councillors of districts 9 & 10 will not speak up on behalf of the residents regarding the issues caused by the CBRM RAT. Why?
Our Mayor and her family want to be able to drive their ATVs through our backyards. Oh well then! FYI: You are not welcome to drive your ATVs through our backyards. You are very welcome in our community otherwise!
Official statement from the current mayor of CBRM (2023), in the Mayor's office, promoting the increased use of ATVs in residential areas. This is fact and public. ATVs are killing Cape Bretoners and destroying our beautiful seaside community but....
Let's get the RATs out of our community :-)
I have to make this statement so it is clear that I am not seen as harassing our elected officials or any groups of people: The following is political commentary related to community damaging and people harming policies that need to be reversed for the betterment of "all CBRM". This article is about recent unsanctioned decisions and actions in CBRM that are causing real community issues and can most likely be correlated to deaths and injuries, that's all.
